Travelers Conference 2016: Session One, Monday

Scott Martindale, LPC

Scott is a licensed professional counselor working to treat depression, anxiety, and transition issues with adults. His work has provided him insight into the causes of depression, treatment modalities, and methods to deal with continuous symptoms. He is passionate about mental health and the need to shed light on current issues regarding our healthcare employees and how proper treatment can help to improve their overall quality of life. He holds a master’s in Counseling and Human Development from Hardin Simmons University and is a visiting professor at several universities. Additionally, Scott is the chief executive officer of Republic Health Resources, a Joint Commission certified travel nursing firm based in Dallas, Texas.

Chad Williams, Financial Planner

Chad is a licensed financial advisor with Edward Jones who serves individuals, families, and business clients throughout the country. He attended Saint Louis University, graduating with high honors and distinction, receiving his  bachelor's and master's degree. He currently serves the firm  in many capacities, the most recent of which includes training new financial advisors in the Northern Virginia area, recruiting on behalf of the firm as a secondary growth leader, and serving as a visiting veteran where he spends time at Edward Jones' headquarters to train new financial advisors.

Laura Latimer, MOT

Laura is an occupational therapist who has been working as a traveler for over 5 years. She started to highlight great recruiters, companies, and travelers. As she traveled she saw the need for solid, trusted recommendations of recruiters, as well as actionable guides and resources to use. The part of her that loves to help and create value in this world thought, “Why not me! I'll create this for our industry”.

Melanie Theriac, RN

Melanie started Medical Staffing Solutions in 2001 and 15 years later has healthcare travel contracts in all 50 states. As an RN, she finds satisfaction in knowing that her company is providing healthcare facilities with excellent clinicians to help with their shortage of healthcare staff. As the CEO and Managing Partner, the best part of her day is hearing the buzz of growth in her office and knowing that her company is employing hundreds of healthcare professionals.

Joan Reneer, RN, BSN

Joan is the Chief Operating Officer and co-owner of Medical Staffing Solutions and has spent the last 13 years growing the business.

Joseph Smith, RT, EA

Joseph finished degrees in accounting and respiratory therapy, and worked as a travel respiratory therapist before founding TravelTax and TravelTax Canada, a tax practice catering to the travel healthcare professional and mobile professionals in other staffing segments. TravelTax is well known in the healthcare staffing industry and serves a substantial client base of domestic and international mobile professionals, and their staffing agencies. His firm prepares U.S. and Canadian returns and represents clients before the IRS, Canadian Revenue Agency, and State tax agencies in audits, tax controversies, and litigation support.

Laura Gasparis Vonfrolio, RN, PhD

Laura is a businesswoman, seminar leader, assistant professor, lecturer, and writer. She has helped thousands of nurses prepare for CCRN and CEN certification exams using her CCRN and CEN review courses and tapes. She has written on critical care topics for AJN, Nursing, and RN magazines and co-authored or edited 11 books on critical care and emergency nursing. She is currently an educational consultant and president of Education Enterprises.

Course Summary

Monday's session covers a variety of professional development and clinical topics including SVT vs. V-tach, how to work with and negotiate a contract with healthcare travel companies, social and cultural information for travelers working in Hawaii, retirement strategies for healthcare professionals, conquering depression on a travel assignment, tax issues for healthcare travelers, and differences in licensure laws and regulations state-by-state.
