Course Summary

Human trafficking (human slavery) is seen in the United States and across the world. Healthcare professionals may be the only ones available to victims that can help them escape their captors and move from victimhood to survivor. This training course covers the legal basics (trafficking involves force, fraud, or coercion for labor or sex, and doesn't require border crossing, unlike smuggling), and explains that traffickers are usually people victims already know, exploiting vulnerabilities like poverty, homelessness, addiction, or prior trauma through tactics like romantic grooming, fake job offers, and debt bondage.

It describes the significant psychological, physical, and social harm survivors experience, including PTSD, chronic injuries, and risk of re-trafficking. The second half focuses on practical guidance for healthcare providers, who often encounter victims: how to build trust, spot red flags (unexplained injuries, a controlling companion, fearful behavior), document cases safely, make trauma-informed referrals, and meet mandated reporting requirements. It repeatedly directs providers to the National Human Trafficking Hotline (1-888-373-7888, text 233733) as a key resource.

Criteria for Successful Completion

Study the course material, achieve a score of 80% or higher on the post test (the post test can be repeated if a learner scores less than 80%), complete the course evaluation, and pay where required. No partial credit will be awarded.
